My urns follow in the tradition of pottery as historical record, domestic object, democratic art form, and political message. I am using the urn as a canvas for social critique. My urns serve as a lamentation for the human tendency to prioritize power, profit, and convenience over the well-being of the collective and the environment. I take inspiration from Art Nouveau artisans: their passionate and skillful compositions using natural elements in rebellion against the mechanization of human labor during the Industrial Revolution. I am using the urn form now to memorialize this slice of the Anthropocene era, the limitations of human organizations and the price of progress. There is a hopeful note found in the human hand evident on these surfaces, our hands are potent and we can choose the mark we make.

I approach art making through my experience in the craft world. I worked as a production potter for 7 years before completing an art program and I continue to be led by materials and decorative objects in my studio practice.
